How to save on online courses and learning
What this category covers
This hub is for online learning. It covers course platforms like Coursera, coding education from CodeLabs Academy, and book summaries from Blinkist. They're very different products, but they share a pricing model: a subscription or a one-off fee for access to content, with discounts mostly aimed at getting you to commit.
The deals grid above shows only the codes and sales each brand has published through its affiliate program, with the end date it set. When there's nothing live, the guide below covers the other ways to bring the cost down, many of which don't need a code at all.
How online course pricing works
Learning platforms usually sell in one of three ways. You pay per course or certificate. You pay a subscription for access to a whole library. Or you pay a larger fee for a structured program like a bootcamp, sometimes with payment plans.
Discounts follow those models. Subscriptions are commonly discounted on annual billing. Individual courses go on sale, sometimes sitewide. Bigger programs are more likely to offer early enrollment pricing, scholarships or payment plans than a simple promo code.
- Per course: best if you need one specific skill or certificate.
- Subscription: best if you'll keep learning through the year. Compare the annual price with how many courses you'd realistically finish.
- Programs and bootcamps: compare the total cost, what support is included, and refund terms, not only the headline discount.
Ways to save that don't need a code
Online learning has more free and low-cost routes than almost any other category. Before paying for anything, it's worth checking these.
- Free previews and audits. Many platforms let you watch some or all of a course without paying, with the certificate or graded work behind the paywall.
- Free trials. Subscription platforms often offer a trial. Plan a course you can finish, or nearly finish, inside it.
- Financial aid and scholarships. Some platforms and programs offer them. The application usually takes a little time, so apply early.
- Employer learning budgets. Many employers pay for job-related courses. Ask your manager or HR before you buy.
- Libraries and schools. Public libraries and universities sometimes provide free access to learning platforms for members and students.
Choosing a course you'll finish
The most expensive course is the one you don't finish. A subscription that goes unused for months costs more than any discount saves, so a little honesty up front is worth more than a bigger percentage off.
Before you buy, look at the course length and weekly time commitment, whether it's self-paced or has deadlines, and what you'll have at the end: a certificate, a project, or simply the knowledge. If you need the credential for work, check that it's recognized by the people you want to impress.
Book summaries and reading apps
Book summary apps like Blinkist are sold as subscriptions, typically with a free trial and a lower monthly price on annual billing. They're a good fit if you want the key ideas of many nonfiction books quickly, and less so if you prefer reading whole books.
As with any subscription, note when the trial ends and how to cancel if you decide it isn't for you.
Bootcamps and structured programs
Structured programs, like coding bootcamps, cost more and come with more support. Discounts here are less about promo codes and more about early enrollment, scholarships, payment plans or employer sponsorship.
When comparing programs, ask what's included: live teaching, mentoring, career support, and the materials you keep. Read the refund and withdrawal policy carefully, because it matters far more here than with a low-cost subscription.
Related savings
If you're learning for work, the tools you'll use often have deals too. Our software deals and business software deals pages are good next stops, and both categories tend to have their biggest offers around Cyber Monday.
When to buy
These are patterns across the category, not promises from any one store. The end date on each offer is the one to trust.
| January | New Year learning goals bring offers on subscriptions and courses. |
|---|---|
| Late summer | Back-to-school season brings attention to student pricing and new course starts. |
| Late November | Black Friday and Cyber Monday are when many learning platforms discount annual plans. |
| Before program start dates | Bootcamps and cohort programs sometimes offer early enrollment pricing ahead of each start date. |
