Before you buy
Monthly or annual?
Software discounts usually apply to one billing period. Check which plan the offer is for before you compare.
Renewal price
First-term prices often renew higher. The checkout page shows the renewal price, so note it and the date.
Licenses and devices
Check how many computers or users a license covers, and whether it's for Windows, Mac or both.
Try the free version
Many tools have a free tier or trial. Use it to be sure the paid features are ones you'll use.

How to save on software and apps
How software deals usually work
Software is sold in a handful of ways, and the type of license changes what a deal is worth. Most tools today are subscriptions billed monthly or yearly. Some still sell a one-time or lifetime license. And many have a free tier, with the paid plan unlocking more features, devices or storage.
Discounts follow the same shape. The most common is a lower price on an annual or multi-year plan compared with paying monthly. Promo codes, when brands publish them, tend to take a percentage off the first term, add extra months, or cut the price of a bundle. The deals grid above shows only the codes and sales each brand has published through its affiliate program, with the end date it set.
This hub covers the whole category, from security tools and utilities to creative apps and hosting. If you know what kind of tool you want, the narrower pages are quicker: VPN deals, antivirus deals and web hosting and domain deals.
The renewal price is the real price
With subscriptions, the discount almost always applies to the first billing period. After that, the plan renews automatically, often at a higher standard price. That isn't a trick so much as how the category works, but it's the main way people end up paying more than they planned.
So when you compare two offers, compare three numbers: what you pay today, what it renews at, and when. A smaller discount on a tool with a lower renewal price can be cheaper over two or three years than a big intro discount that renews high.
- Set a reminder a couple of weeks before renewal, so you can decide on your own terms.
- Check renewal offers. Some brands offer existing customers a discount to renew, especially if you reach out before the renewal date.
- Turn off auto-renew if you only need the tool for a project, then turn it back on if you decide to keep it.
What to check before you buy
A cheap license that doesn't cover your setup isn't a saving. Before you pay, check a few practical things on the product page.
- Platform. Is it for Windows, Mac, mobile, or all of them? Tools like Parallels, Intego and Tidy Up are built for Mac, while many utilities like IObit focus on Windows.
- Number of devices or users. Family, team and multi-device plans can cost less per device than buying single licenses.
- What the tier includes. Feature lists differ a lot between basic and premium plans. Pay for the tier whose features you'll actually use.
- Upgrades. With one-time licenses, check whether major new versions are included or cost extra.
- Refunds and trials. Read the refund window and trial terms, including whether a trial turns into a paid plan automatically.
Security and privacy tools
Security software is the biggest group in this hub. That includes antivirus from Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, Intego and SecureMac, VPNs from NordVPN and Surfshark, and password management from LastPass.
These tools are increasingly sold as bundles, where a top tier includes a VPN, a password manager or identity features alongside the main product. Bundles can save money, but only if you'd use every part. If you already pay for one of those tools separately, compare the bundle against what you have before upgrading.
Creative, media and productivity apps
The rest of the category is a wide mix: photo and video tools like HitPaw and Everimaging, stock images from Bigstock, video hosting from Vimeo, PDF editing from PDF Expert, backups from Mail Backup X, SEO from Semrush, social scheduling from Vista Social and forms from Gravity Forms.
For tools you'll use for work, check whether your employer or school already provides a license, and whether the cost counts as a business expense for you. For tools you'll use on a single project, a monthly plan you cancel afterwards can beat an annual plan you won't finish using.
Hosting and domains
Web hosting and domain names follow the same first-term-then-renewal pattern as software, often with an even bigger gap between the two. Our web hosting and domain deals page covers Liquid Web, Network Solutions, Domain.com and EuroDNS, with tips on reading renewal prices and add-ons.
Can you stack software codes?
Usually not. Software checkouts generally take one promo code, and many already have the discount built into the plan price. What you can sometimes combine is a sale price with extra months, a bundle discount, or an education or nonprofit price where the brand offers one.
If a code won't apply, the most common reasons are that it's for a different plan length, for new customers only, or for a specific product rather than the whole range.
When to buy
These are patterns across the category, not promises from any one store. The end date on each offer is the one to trust.
| Late November | Black Friday and especially Cyber Monday are when many software brands run their biggest offers on annual and multi-year plans. |
|---|---|
| Back to school | Student and education pricing, where brands offer it, gets the most attention in late summer. |
| New major versions | Launch and upgrade offers often run when a new version comes out. |
| Before renewal | The weeks before your own renewal date are a good time to check for retention or renewal offers. |
Software deals FAQ
Where do these software codes come from?
From each brand's own affiliate program, which we check once a day. Every offer shows the end date the brand set, and expired offers drop off automatically.
Why does my software renew at a higher price?
Most software discounts apply to the first billing period only. After that, plans usually renew automatically at the standard price. Check the renewal price and date at checkout, and set a reminder.
Is a lifetime license better than a subscription?
It can be if you'll use the tool for years, but check whether future major versions are included. A subscription usually includes updates, while some lifetime licenses only cover the version you buy.
Can I use a software code on a monthly plan?
Sometimes. Many software codes apply only to annual or multi-year plans. The offer terms on the brand's site say which plans a code covers.
When do software deals happen?
Black Friday and Cyber Monday in late November are the biggest moments for most software brands. Some also run offers when a new version launches or around back-to-school.
