How to save on antivirus software
How antivirus deals usually work
Antivirus is sold almost entirely as yearly subscriptions, and the discount is nearly always on the first year. Brands like Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, Intego, SecureMac and IObit compete hard for new customers, which is why the first-year price can be much lower than what the plan renews at.
Promo codes, when brands publish them, usually take a percentage off a plan, cover more devices for the same price, or discount a multi-year plan. The deals grid above shows only offers each brand has published through its affiliate program, with the end date it set.
Picking the right plan
Antivirus plans usually come in tiers, from basic malware protection up to suites with extras. The best deal is the cheapest plan that covers what you actually need.
- Your devices. List every computer, phone and tablet. Check the plan covers that many, on those platforms.
- Mac or Windows. Intego and SecureMac focus on Mac. IObit is best known for Windows utilities. Others cover both.
- Extras. VPNs, password managers, identity monitoring and parental controls push the price up. If you already have a VPN or a password manager, you may not need a suite.
- Free versions. Some brands offer free basic protection. It can be enough for light use, and paying is mostly for extra features and support.
Handling the renewal
Antivirus subscriptions usually renew automatically, often at the standard price. That's the single biggest cost to plan for.
Note the renewal date the day you buy. A few weeks before it, compare the renewal price with what the same brand charges new customers, and with competitors. Some brands offer existing customers a renewal discount, especially if you get in touch before the date. If you decide to switch, uninstall the old tool fully before installing a new one, since two security tools running together can cause problems.
Are multi-year plans worth it?
Two- and three-year plans are often cheaper per year and protect you from a price rise at the first renewal. The trade-off is paying more up front and committing to one brand for longer. If you're happy with a tool and plan to keep it, a multi-year plan is usually the cheapest option. If you're trying a brand for the first time, one year keeps your options open.
Can you stack antivirus codes?
Usually only one code per order, and many antivirus checkouts already show a discounted price without one. If a code won't apply, check whether it's limited to a specific product, plan length or new customers.
When to buy
These are patterns across the category, not promises from any one store. The end date on each offer is the one to trust.
| Late November | Black Friday and Cyber Monday are when security software brands most often run their biggest offers. |
|---|---|
| Back to school | New-laptop season can bring offers aimed at students and families. |
| Before renewal | The weeks before your renewal date are the time to compare prices and ask about renewal offers. |
Antivirus deals FAQ
Where do these antivirus codes come from?
From each brand's own affiliate program, which we check once a day. Every offer shows the end date the brand set, and expired offers drop off automatically.
Why does antivirus cost more when it renews?
Most antivirus discounts apply to the first year only, and plans usually renew automatically at the standard price. Check the renewal price at checkout and set a reminder before the renewal date.
Do I need antivirus on a Mac?
Macs have built-in protections, and many people add extra security software too. Mac-focused tools like Intego and SecureMac exist for that. Whether you need one depends on how you use your Mac.
Is a multi-year antivirus plan worth it?
Usually, if you plan to keep the same tool. Multi-year plans are often cheaper per year and avoid a price rise at the first renewal, but you pay more up front.
Can I run two antivirus programs at once?
It's generally not recommended, because they can conflict. If you switch brands, uninstall the old one completely first.
